In January 2004, a group of enterprising women decided to form a
women’s dragon boat team to celebrate Alcan’s 50 years in
Kitimat. Northern Spirit was born! In 2006, the group
decided to hold their own Northern Spirit Community Regatta to promote
this exhilarating sport, now known as the Kitimat Community Challenge,
held annually on the July 1st weekend.
